History of Ellers Mortuary
This year, we are proud to be observing our 84th year of funeral service at Ellers Mortuary. In 1924 Howard W. Ellers founded Ellers Mortuary, and ran the business from his home in Kokomo.
Over the next decade, there were several locations and in the 1930’s the business settled at its present address at 725 S. Main Street. The second chapel opened in 1993 to better serve the families on the south side of Kokomo.
The Ellers Family
Howard and Blanche Ellers were the parents of two sons and two daughters. Their names were Joseph H. Ellers, Gale W. Ellers, Martha L. Rayl, and Betty J. Fisher. The eldest son, Joseph Ellers, and his father were the original partners in the family business. At a later time Howard’s younger son, Gale, joined the partnership. Ellers Mortuary was truly a family-run business with Betty serving as secretary and Joseph’s wife Annabelle, being the organist for a number of years.
When Howard died in 1952, his sons continued the business. Joseph then retired in 1980 and his half of the partnership was turned over to his brother Gale. Gale incorporated the mortuary to insure the business would carry on in the event of his death. While doing so he included Phillip D. Weaver as a corporation officer. In 1982 Gale Ellers passed away unexpectedly and his wife, Mary Ann “Mimi” Ellers continued the business.
Carrying on a legacy...
Mimi, her daughter, Dr. Beth Ellers, Phillip D.Weaver, and Phillip’s wife Dee Ann, served as corporation officers. In 1984 Mimi Ellers also unexpectedly passed away. Again, Ellers Mortuary continued without interruption of family service with the assistance of longtime employee, Richard Myers, and the support staff.
In 2007, Phillip D. Weaver and Beth Ellers made the decision to retire from Ellers Mortuary, and Paul St. Pierre acquired the business. Paul, along with longtime Ellers Mortuary funeral director Kelly J. Miller, now co-own the mortuary. They are dedicated to continuing the Ellers Mortuary tradition of providing outstanding funeral service for Indiana families. Today, we continue to uphold our service to the highest standards, and pledge our commitment to the communities we serve.
